SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The state-owned steelmaker Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) announced that it has joined forces with SMS Group to decarbonize steel production in the country. The two companies have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote sustainable steel production.
The MoU was signed between the two companies at SAIL’s Management Training Institute (MTI) at Ranchi, Jharkhand in early August this year.
In accordance with the MoU, the companies will focus on initiatives targeting long-term sustainable steelmaking practices, with special impetus on decarbonizing steel production process in SAIL’s integrated steelmaking plants across the country. It aims to make steel industry more competitive and environment-friendly. Furthermore, it will boost innovation and sustainability in the steel sector. The efforts will be backed by technological expertise from the SMS Group.
Saumya Tokdar, CGM of SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant noted that the collaboration provides access to better technologies and processes to reduce its carbon footprint, thereby facilitating the transition to green steel production. Meantime, Marco Asquini, CEO, APAC & MEA Region of SMS Group said that the MoU serves as a significant milestone for decarbonisation of the Indian steel industry.
