Russia Continued to be CIS Region's Primary Crude Steel Producer

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests nominal decline in crude steel output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region in September this year. The regional output reported decline of 0.3% when matched with the previous year. The output totalled 8.176 million tonnes (Mt) in September 2020, when matched with the output of 8.203 Mt during the same month a year before.

The leading steel producer in the region was Russia. The Russian output totalled 5.860 Mt, accounting for approximately 72% of the total regional production. The Sep ‘20 output by the country has increased marginally by 0.8% from 5.816 Mt in the same month a year before. Meantime, the output by Ukraine recorded decline by 5.4% over the year from 1.745 Mt to 1.651 Mt. Kazakhstan, the third largest regional steel producer, saw its output up by 3.2% year-on-year.

African Region Steel Output Dropped in September

The cumulative crude steel output during the first nine months of the current year totalled 74.298 Mt, which is lower by 2.5% over the previous year. The crude steel production by the region had totalled 76.236 Mt from January to September in 2019. Only Uzbekistan reported increased year-on-year output during this period.

The top steel producers in the C.I.S region in Jan-Sep ‘20 were Russia (54.026 Mt), Ukraine (16.400 Mt) and Kazakhstan (3.046 Mt).
