Plastics Cited as the Most Harmful Waste to the Environment

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Sultanate of Oman generates around 2.3 million tonnes of recyclable waste per year. Plastic dominates the list of wastes that are harmful to the environment, said the findings of a recent study conducted by the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah).

The report calls for key initiatives to reduce the impact of plastic on soil, groundwater, and organisms in the marine environment. The initiatives include recycling the waste, substituting its use by environmentally-friendly alternative materials and raising awareness among general public on the harmful impacts of plastic to the environment. People must think twice before using plastic and try to replace them with biodegradable and reusable materials wherever possible, the report said.

The environmental services company has shifted focus to adopting a circular economy model, which aims to reduce the rate of consumption of natural resources by extending the average lifecycle of materials. The circular economy model will contribute significantly in reducing the impact caused by waste management industry on the environment, thus helping the country achieve its Vision 2040 targets.

The responsible local recycling of waste generated in the country could generate approximately OMR530 million every year.
