SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A massive fire that occurred at the U.P. Paper LLC storage facility in Manistique community has resulted in significant financial damage. Meantime, no injuries have been reported.
According to the Manistique Public Safety Department (MPSD), it received a call from the facility around 3 p.m, after fire erupted at one of the storage facilities on site. Upon arriving at the site, the firefighters found the fire in one of the five metal canopies used to store compressed bales of recycled cardboard along with other items. Approximately 1,200 recycled cardboard bales, worth nearly $100,000, were burned by the fire.
The firefighters were on site for about 18 hours to ensure that the fire was completely put out. An estimated 1million gallons of water and services from several local fire departments were utilized.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The authorities have already begun a criminal investigation to look into the reason for the fire. The suspects have no association with the company. Also, it ruled out foul play by company employees.
Fire Chief John Smith expressed gratitude to the neighbouring departments for their timely support. The assistance provided by them was instrumental in containing the fire and preventing further damage, he noted.
Meantime, the company spokesperson noted that its primary focus lies on ensuring the safety of its employees. Also, it will cooperate with authorities to identify the cause of the incident, he added.
