North American Crude Steel Production Surged Over 5% in 2017

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Americas region recorded notable rise in crude steel production during the previous year. The latest trade data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests 5% jump in output by the North American countries. Similarly, South American crude steel output surged higher by nearly 9% in 2017 when compared with 2016.

The regional steel output by North America totaled 115.960 million tonnes (Mt) during 2017, as compared with the output of 110.624 Mt in 2016.

The following table provides the combined production figures for the full year 2017 in comparison with 2016.

During the month of December 2017 alone, the region produced 9.730 million tonnes (Mt) of crude steel. The output recorded modest jump from 9.504 Mt in November last year. The production by the US- the largest crude steel producing country in the region rose from 6.640 Mt in Nov ’17 to 6.760 Mt in December 2017. The other key producers in the region were Mexico and Canada with monthly crude steel production totaling 1.690 Mt and 1.220 Mt respectively.

The production by South American countries totaled 43.729 Mt in 2017, as compared with 40.220 Mt in 2016. Out of this, Brazil accounted for 34.365 Mt of production, followed by Argentina with 4.624 Mt.
