SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The crude steel output by the North American region recorded 9.4% year-on-year decline in the month of March 2020, says the World Steel Association (worldsteel). The production dropped from 10.661 million tonnes (Mt) in March 2019 to 9.657 Mt in March this year. All countries in the region except El Salvador witnessed reduced production.
The leading steel producer in the region was the U.S. The monthly output by the country recorded 6% year-on-year decline from 7.686 Mt to 7.222 Mt. The Mexican output was down sharply by 20.6% to total 1.330 Mt in March this year. The county’s output had totalled 1.676 Mt in March last year. In third place was Canada, which reported 15.3% year-on-year decline. The Canadian crude steel output totalled 1.060 Mt.

The output by other countries in the region is as follows: Guatemala (20,000 tonnes), Cuba (15,000 tonnes) and El Salvador (10,000 tonnes).
The region produced 29.516 Mt of crude steel during the initial three-month period of the current year. This compares with 30.748 Mt of production during Jan-Mar ’19. The leading steel producers in the region were the U.S. (21.946 Mt), Mexico (4.144 Mt) and Canada (3.277 Mt). The region accounted for nearly 7% of the total global steel output during the opening three months, which totalled 443.030 Mt.
