SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel announced that it has attained a major milestone by achieving 43% reduction on carbon emissions in a test furnace at its East Nippon Works Kimitsu Area plant. The tests were held at the furnace during the period from November to December last year.

Since May 2022, the test furnace has been conducting developmental testing on its Super COURSE50 technology. The modern technology lowers carbon dioxide emissions by using hot hydrogen. By 2022, the company's emissions had decreased by 22%. Additionally, it stated that emissions had decreased by 33% in the preceding year. Nippon Steel is now a global leader in the development of decarbonization technologies because to the furnace's 43% decrease.
Under the Japanese government-funded Nippon Steel Carbon Neutral Vision 2050 initiative, the company is developing three cutting-edge technologies, including the Super COURSE50 technology.
The company intends to step up its efforts to apply the technology in large blast furnaces after it has been successfully implemented in test furnaces. According to the corporation, there are about 800 blast furnaces worldwide, with 20 of them located in Japan. In addition, the steel sector has been a significant source of pollution due to blast furnaces.
