SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC), an international coalition of steel manufacturers, has decided to promote a new standard to measure and reduce carbon emissions. The standard targets to accelerate the transition to low-emission steel and incentivize steelmakers to use the cleanest steelmaking methodology at their manufacturing plants.

Robust Steel Demand to Propel Capacity Expansion
The primary focus of the steel coalition will be to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from global steel industry by providing relevant information on sustainable steelmaking to decision makers. The Council noted that any agreement on new emissions standard for steel production must focus on the emission volumes generated, and not on how the steel is made. It urged the global steelmaking industry to adopt the innovative and cleaner steel production strategy by the U.S., which has delivered up to 70% reduction in carbon emissions in steel production.
The new standard will accelerate actual reduction of GHG emissions and help key decision makers to make informed decisions by providing them with the most accurate data. Moreover, the standard is expected to create a level playing field for steel manufacturers across the globe.
