New Roadmap Calls for Urgent Action on Plastic Waste Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The British Plastic Federation (BPF) and RECOUP have released a new Recycling Roadmap that urges immediate action on recycling plastic trash in the UK. It offers updated information on the nation's recycling goals and obstacles for plastic garbage recycling.

The Roadmap's first iteration was published in 2021. Many of the adjustments recommended in the report haven't been put into effect yet, though. According to the analysis, the UK is unlikely to reach the target of a 69% plastic recycling rate by 2030. The government's tardiness in implementing policies and the difficult economic climate are the primary reasons for the target's failure.

The necessity for more government support is emphasized in the new Roadmap, especially when it comes to expanding recycling infrastructure. It calls for large investments in chemical and mechanical recycling techniques.

According to the BFP's optimistic prediction, the UK may still be able to reach a 70% recycling and reuse rate for plastic by 2035. Reaching this target might result in a nearly 15% decrease in the amount of plastic waste sent for incineration. According to the Federation, this might also cut carbon emissions by about a million tonnes.
