In Nigeria, Lagos alone generates approximately 9000 metric tons of waste daily.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Principles for Responsible Investment, in its latest report, warned that plastic production as well as consumption continues to be on the rise across the globe. The plastic waste generation has accelerated, mainly on account of rise in production and consumption pattern coupled with inefficient waste management system.
In Nigeria, Lagos alone generates approximately 9000 metric tons of waste daily. The estimates by The Lagos State Waste Management Authority suggests that single-use plastic bottles and bags account for nearly 86% of the waste generated. The latest available statistics indicate that only 45% of waste in Nigeria is collected. Also, 80% of the plastic waste reaches dump sites, while only 10% gets recycled. The country lacks adequate waste management infrastructure and policies, the report noted.
The primary contributor to plastic waste menace is polyethene terephthalate (PET) bottles. The tackling of proper disposal of PET bottles will play a key role in addressing the issue of plastic waste.
The report calls for collaborative efforts from bottlers, governments and non-government organizations (NGOs) to organize awareness campaigns as well as support similar campaigns aimed at reducing plastic waste, promoting reusable bottle alternatives and establishing sustainable packaging practices.
