SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The ‘European Plastics Pact’ aims to boost a circular economy for plastics in the European region.
The pact aims to design all plastic packaging and single-use plastic products placed on the market to be recyclable by 2025. Also, it calls for reduction of virgin plastic products and packaging by at least 20%, by weight, by 2025. Another goal is to boost the collection, sorting and recycling capacity by 25% by 2025. In addition, the companies that use plastics in their product and packaging must use at least 30% recycled plastics by weight.

The aim of the newly published roadmap is to address the environmental threats caused by plastic pollution. It urges signatories to implement key actions that would deliver on ambitious targets, thereby transforming the use of plastics across the Europe. In short, it aims to develop new ways across the value chain to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic packaging and single-use plastic products.
The European Plastics Pact offers a common platform, ensuring closer collaboration among partners to speed up its journey towards a circular bio-economy for plastics by 2025.
As per rough estimates, Europe consumed nearly 51.2 million tonnes of plastic in 2018, out of which approximately 40% were packaging.
