SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Espoo, Finland-headquartered oil refining and marketing company announced that it has completed first industrial scale processing of liquefied plastic waste at its Finland refinery. The company processed around 400 tonnes of the material this autumn.
According to the company, the processing run is a very important milestone towards its goal of replacing the use of crude oil at its own refineries. It plans gradual increment in volume of liquefied plastic waste processing. Incidentally, a processing run is already planned at its Porvoo refinery next year. Neste aims to process in excess of 1 million tonnes of waste plastic every year starting from 2030 onwards.

Neste had carried out extensive research and laboratory tests, so as to ensure the feasibility and safety of the process. The processing run was supported by Ravago and a number of other plastic value chain partners.
The new process will help to reduce dependency of crude oil in the production of new plastics.
Mercedes Alonso, Executive Vice President, Renewable Polymers and Chemicals at Neste commented that the high-quality recycled feedstock produced through the process will contribute significantly towards accelerating the necessary shift to the circular bioeconomy for plastics.
