SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), in its new report, has unveiled the additional benefits of using recycled PET over virgin material.
It is based on the findings by the life-cycle study conducted by the Association in partnership with the consulting firm Franklin Associates. The study had analyzed the impacts on various steps in the life cycle of PET.
According to the findings, the use of recycled PET resin in place of virgin resin could lead to up to 40% reduction in process and transportation energy and 75% lower total energy demand. Also, it offers 60% reduction in greenhouse gas over virgin material. The report published by NAPCOR provides summary of environmental benefits resulting from PET recycling in the U.S. and Canada.
Incidentally, over 2 billion pounds of PET are recycled per annum in the above two countries. Also, a recent report published by the industry group had noted that reclaimers in these countries recycled nearly 139 million pounds of PET thermoforms in 2018. This is significantly higher by over 60% over the prior year. The number of PET thermofoam processing outlets too has registered notable growth.
