SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) announced release of its 2020 PET Recycling Report.
According to the report, the end use consumption of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) reported 10% surge in the U.S. and Canada during the year. This reiterates strong support for postconsumer content in brand packaging. Furthermore, it demonstrates the PET’s recycling value in communities. Incidentally, the cumulative consumption of recycled PET consumption in the U.S. and Canada recorded significant increase from 1 billion pounds in 2010 to 1.8 billion pounds in 2020.

For the first time, Food/Beverage and Non-Food/Beverage Bottle categories emerged as the largest end market user of post consumer PET bottles, surpassing fiber. The use of RPET by the above categories witnessed 32% overall growth, NAPCOR Report said.
The recycling rate for PET plastic bottles in the U.S. stood at 26.6% in 2020, down from the rate of 27.9% in 2019. The dip in recycling rate is attributed to challenges faced during the previous year, including closure of redemption centres and disruption in curbside recycling. Meantime, the collection of PET bottles recorded marginal decline by 2.3% in the U.S.
The North American PET recycling rate, including data from Mexico and Canada, in 2020 was 33.9%, slightly down from 35% in 2019.
