SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) foresees increased logging from federal lands and higher tariffs later this year.
The Association has been urging the U.S. administration to boost domestic supply of timber from federally owned lands in an environmentally responsible manner. It welcomed the recent executive order by President Trump that proposes to increase timber production from federal lands by 25%.

U.S. Sawmill Production Decreased in Q1
Following this, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins issued a memo to the U.S. Forest Service to boost timber outputs, simplify permitting process, reduce implementation burdens, remove National Environmental Policy Act processes and ensure a reliable and consistent supply of timber by directly engaging with states, local government, and forest product producers.
The current U.S. lumber production is not enough to meet domestic demand. As per estimates, the U.S. produces only around 35 billion board feet of lumber per year, whereas the annual consumption is estimated at around 50 million board feet. The new move is expected to help the nation move towards self-sufficiency, although it may take several years to see the impact.
On the flip side, the Canadian lumber shipments into the U.S. are expected to more than double by September this year.
