SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leaders in the Mon Valley have asked President Joe Biden to grant Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel's request to acquire U.S. Steel. Even though the deadline is drawing near, the U.S. administration has not yet made its final decision public. Biden had previously expressed his disapproval of the agreement. Trump, the newly elected president, has likewise voiced similar opinions.

A group of 20 Mon Valley leaders wrote to President Biden, stating that the only way to secure the future of thousands of jobs in the area and protect the Mon Valley's steelmaking industry is to approve the takeover plan. If Biden rejects the plan, it may be disastrous for many people, said Cletus Lee, the mayor of North Braddock. He stated that the agreement would benefit and save the Mon Valley.
The discussions with the While House are ongoing, according to West Mifflin Mayor Chris Kelly.
Although opinions among steelworkers are varied, the United Steelworkers (USW) union has openly expressed its opposition to the agreement. The union members pointed out that Nippon Steel's previously declared intention to relocate jobs from the Mon Valley to other states was not explained.
The mayors and the USW both agreed that a definitive decision must be made as soon as possible.
