SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A workplace accident occurred the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 27, at Century Aluminum Company in Goose Creek, resulting in the death of a longtime employee.
At approximately 4:54 p.m., Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell was alerted by a local hospital about an emergency. The patient, identified as Daniel E. McCoy, 61, from Summerville, had been transported to the hospital by emergency medical services after sustaining severe injuries in a fall at the industrial facility.
According to reports, McCoy fell approximately 15 feet while at work. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to the traumatic injuries he suffered from the fall.
Berkeley County EMS and the Goose Creek Rural Fire Department responded. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), along with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
“It is with deep sorrow and regret we confirm that one of our employees has passed away following an incident at our Mt. Holly plant on Sept. 27,” according to a statement from Century Aluminum. “We are supporting the bereaved family, and our team is standing by to support colleagues who share in mourning their loss. In addition to on-site counseling and support services, employees may access a 24-hour hotline for ongoing support. As part of our standard emergency response, an internal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway. We will collaborate with local authorities and with the occupational health and safety agency to understand the details of what happened. While we do not yet know all the answers, we are committed to working diligently through the process because safety remains our highest priority. For now, our immediate focus remains on the well-being of the family and employees impacted by this incident. To respect the privacy of the family and to maintain the integrity of the investigation, we will refrain from further comment at this time.”
Further updates on the investigation are expected as OSHA reviews the safety protocols and conditions at the facility. Authorities are continuing their investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
