Mali Launched Fresh Rules to Fight Illegal Gold Mining Activities

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African nation of Mali announced fresh rules to combat illegal gold mining activity in the country, in a bid to overtake South Africa as the second biggest gold producer in the African continent, after Ghana. Currently, Mali is the third largest gold producer in the region. The proposed rules are expected to boost Mali’s gold output by at least 15%.

According to Lamine Traore, Mining Minister of Mali, all small-scale miners would now need to take permit for operating in the country. The country aims to set up 200 cooperatives in partnership with the World Bank in order to formalize middlemen trading. It has sought assistance from Barrick Gold Corporation towards allocation of land for those workers to formalize sales.

Meantime, Abdoulaye Pona, Head of Mining Chamber noted that the country could be able to significantly boost its gold output, if it had better control over production and exports from artisanal mining sector.

Gold mining has been a major contributor to the country’s economy. Also, illegal gold mining has become a source of revenue for militant outfits, thus posing threat to security of the nation.

The country had earlier introduced mining code in 2020, but the same was not implemented effectively.
