LRS Exchange MRF Wins 2024 NWRA Recycling Facility of the Year Award

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): LRS, the nation’s fifth-largest independent waste diversion, recycling, and portable services provider, announces that its cutting-edge LRS Exchange Material Recovery Facility (MRF), featuring technology from CP Group of San Diego, CA, has been honored with the 2024 Recycling Facility of the Year Award by the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA). This prestigious award recognizes the facility’s groundbreaking advancements in sustainability, innovation, and operational efficiency, setting a new benchmark for the recycling industry.

The LRS Exchange MRF, located in the Stockyards neighborhood of Chicago, represents a $50 million dollar investment in the future of waste diversion. Opened in 2023, the LRS Exchange is designed to significantly and sustainably divert one million pounds of recyclables every day, conserving natural resources by reducing the demand for raw materials.

With a current processing capacity of 25 tons of recyclables per hour—set to expand to 35 tons per hour—the facility plays a pivotal role in enhancing waste diversion efforts for both the City of Chicago and surrounding communities and businesses. Equipped with cutting-edge sorting technology, including a CP Auger Screen, advanced screening equipment, six MSS optical sorters, and three Fire Rover Units, the Exchange is poised to safely divert 224 million pounds of recyclables annually.

The Exchange MRF sets itself apart from other facilities because of its ambitious sustainability goals and its community engagement efforts.  LRS has an open-door policy at The Exchange MRF, welcoming community stakeholders and partners.  Since the LRS Exchange MRF opened in 2023, LRS has hosted over 800 guests to visit and tour the facility.  Visitors include university professors and students, package designers, government leaders, businesses, and community groups.  LRS builds advocates for recycling when the veil is lifted, and visitors are show the complexities and challenges of the operation.

The 2024 NWRA Recycling Facility of the Year Award is a testament to the LRS Exchange MRF’s unparalleled commitment to advancing the recycling industry. This recognition not only highlights the facility’s current accomplishments but also sets the stage for future innovations that will continue to drive progress in waste diversion and recycling.  LRS is honored to win NWRA’s 2024 Recycling Facility of the Year award.
