SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): LIBERTY Steel issued updates on regional operations and future outlook.
The integrated Australian operations demonstrated strong performance, despite high energy prices. The Whyalla steel production surged higher by 17% since October last year. Also, the Whyalla Steelworks was awarded a A$292 million rail contract by the Government of Australia towards supply of 147,000 tonnes of rail for the completion of the Inland Rail project. The region also reported 18% surge in alloy sales at LIBERTY Bell Bay.
In Europe, LIBERTY Ostrava in the Czech Republic commenced a modification project valued at around EUR 40 million at its Steckel hot strip mill. The renovation of cutting lines at LIBERTY Częstochowa in Poland is underway. LIBERTY Galati in Romania has invested EUR 5.5 million in strengthening its Hot Rolled Coils production line. In addition, LIBERTY Magona in Italy plans to achieve a capacity increase of more than 20% this year.
The steelmaking activities at Rotherham and Stocksbridge in UK have continued over the first quarter of the year. Meantime, LIBERTY Steel USA has successfully restarted production at its rod mill in Georgetown, South Carolina and LIBERTY Steel & Wire has restarted production at its wire rod mill in Peoria, Illinois.
