SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent study conducted by the students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) points to alarming rise in plastic waste pollution in the city of Chattogram. The findings of the research paper titled ‘Study on environmental pollution and adverse effects due to plastic-polyethylene waste and alternative use in road construction’ were presented during a press conference held at the Press Club Saturday afternoon.

According to the study, the City produces approximately 3,000 tonnes of waste every day. Out of this, 249 tonnes (8.3%) are plastic and polythene waste. Of the plastic and polythene waste, only 109 tonnes are collected and dumped in landfills, while the remaining 140 tonnes end up in drains and canals.
The research study cites several reasons including widespread plastic dumping, lack of sufficient number of bins, population growth and lack of legal action behind the alarming rise in plastic pollution.
As per the study, the volume of plastic and polythene waste in the city is likely to touch 428 tonnes by 2051. It recommends increased use of plastic and polythene with bitumen for road carpeting, which in turn will result in significant reduction in environmental pollution.
