SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Illinois-based producer of unbleached kraft paper and packaging solutions Kapstone Paper and Packaging Corp. will make fresh investment to upgrade the Cowpens, South Carolina paper mill. According to the S.C. Department of Commerce, the company plans to make an investment of approximately $6 million in new equipment at its state-of-the-art facility. It must be noted that WestRock Company has already entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the assts of Kapstone.
The company press release states that the proposed investment will be used towards purchase and installation of a new hydraulic dilution control headbox and bottom-ply chain conveyor. The new equipment is expected to enhance the mill’s speed and efficiency and improve the quality of products from the mill. Incidentally, the Cowpens facility, commissioned in 1992, is a major producer of recycled linerboard and medium.
Steven Leahy, vice president of mill operations at Cowpens paper mill noted that the fresh investment in its industry-leading recycled paper mill demonstrates the company’s continued commitment to Cherokee County. Leahy also thanked the state and local partners for all the support extended to them. Further, he hoped that the investment will secure the future of the mill and generate immense benefits to its stakeholders.

Meantime, Tim Spencer, Cherokee County Council Chairman stated that the expansion demonstrates that Cherokee County is a great place to do business. He extended all possible support that could help the company to grow further in the region. Bobby Hitt, South Carolina Secretary of Commerce too congratulated the company on its latest expansion. He claimed that the announced expansion is yet another proof of its relentless efforts over the past few years in creating a pro-business climate in the state.
The modern, 100% recycled paper mill at 139 Price Farm Rd, Cowpens, S.C. has one paper machine with a capacity of nearly 250,000 tonnes per annum (tpy). Kapstone employs nearly 6,000 employees across its various facilities.
