Kaiser Aluminum Declared Progress in 2030 GHG Emissions Reduction Targets

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Kaiser Aluminum announced publication of 2023 Sustainability Report. The company announced significant progress in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets set for 2030.

Kaiser Aluminum continued to reduce reliance on electricity from coal-fired power sources and gain access to lower carbon electricity sources. The carbon capture project at its Warrick rolling mill is expected to be completed before end-2024, which is expected to reduce Warrick’s Scope 2 emissions and carbon intensity by an estimated 50%. The Trentwood, Washington facility plans to launch capital projects aimed at reducing Scope 1 emissions.

The company reiterated its commitment to work towards the replacement of gas-fired technology. During the previous year, the company has continued to boost sourcing of primary aluminum produced from lower carbon emission sources. The use of recycled aluminum sources in existing as well as new projects has continued to increase. The above listed projects will help the company achieve its overall reduction targets by the end of the decade, the report said.

Kaiser Aluminum targets to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 intensity by 20% and reduce the estimated Scope 3 intensity by 35% by 2030. Also, it aims to reduce estimated combined Scope 1, 2 and 3 intensity by 30%.
