SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): JSW Steel announced launch of new steel slag sand making plant at its Vijayanagar Works in the state of Karnataka, to mark the World Environment Day. The proposed plant, with an installed capacity of 0.30 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), will produce sand from steel slag.
According to the company, the plant will be equipped with value-added technology, which in turn will put an end to the slag disposal issue at the plant. In addition, it will offer low-cost, eco-friendly sand for construction purposes. JSW Steel will use a patented process to treat crushed slag through a vertical shaft impactor and a classifier after metallic separation, said the media note.
The new technology at the plant is expected to effectively address the issues related to sand shortage in the State. The company was appreciated for its environment-friendly initiative. The use of slag will reduce the need for virgin material.
P.K. Murugan, President, JSW Steel Vijayanagar Works noted that steel slag sand will be an economically viable and environmentally acceptable alternative material and that it will replace river sand and manufactured sand used in road and civil constructions. The steel slag sand will be an eco-friendly alternative to river sand, he added.
