The proposed coal gasification plant will convert coal into syngas, which could be used for producing power, petrol, diesel and other petroleum products. In addition, syngas could be used in sponge iron making and by the glass and ceramic industry. Also, the process could be used to produce hydrogen cheaply.
The plant will have almost the same capacity of the one in operation at Angul. Incidentally, the gasification plant at Angul has a production capacity of around 2 million tonne per annum.
The country’s government has been encouraging the use of alternative use of energy across various sectors including steel. The country is estimated to have coal reserves for another 300 years.
