SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Two of the leading European trade groups have announced the launch of a joint roadmap, aimed at achieving 100% recycling rate for aluminum used beverage containers (UBCs) by 2030’.
The roadmap launched by European Aluminum and Metal Packaging Europe, both based in Brussels, states that the full potentials of the aluminum UBCs as a leader in a truly circular economy could be achieved over the next ten years. The aim is to raise the recycling rate from its current level of 76.1% to a real recycling rate of 100% by 2030. The two trade groups had recently held an online webinar, which saw participation by nearly 200 stakeholders in the entire aluminum supply chain.

As per plan, countries which have not yet implemented deposit return system (DRS) will do so by 2025. After the introduction of DRS, the recycling rate will grow rapidly from 73% in 2025 to 98% in 2030.
Andy Doran, chair of the European Aluminium Packaging Group urged the participation and support of the entire value chain in order to achieve this ambitious target. It called upon the supply chain participants to work with the trade groups to maximize the collection of cans, improve the sorting and recycling of the aluminum beverage can through innovation, digitalization and optimal governance of packing recovery systems.
