IP Containerboard Mill in Orange, Texas to Shut Doors

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Memphis, Tennessee-headquartered International Paper (IP) announced a series of strategic actions to strengthen and optimize its manufacturing operations.

According to company press release, it has decided to permanently close its containerboard mill in Orange, Texas. In addition, it will permanently cease production on pulp machines- the #20 machine in Riegelwood, N.C., and the #4 machine in Pensacola, Fla. The above actions will impact nearly 900 positions. The company will try its maximum to minimize the impact on employees, it said.

The Orange mill and the #20 machine in Riegelwood will cease production by the end of the current year. The Pensacola pulp machine, which is currently idled, will not resume production.

The permanent closure of the Orange mill will result in reduction of company’s containerboard capacity by approximately 800,000 tons. The permanent closure on Pensacola and Riegelwood pulp machines will reduce the overall pulp capacity by approximately 500,000 tons.

Mark Sutton, Chairman and CEO, IP noted that the recent actions by the company are expected to further strengthen its competitive platform.
