SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Interfor Corporation announced its decision to indefinitely curtail its operations at its lumber manufacturing facilities in Meldrim, Georgia and Summerville, South Carolina. The curtailments of the above sawmills are in response to the ongoing weak lumber market conditions.
According to company press release issued yesterday, it has decided to curtail log deliveries with immediate effect. It will be followed by an orderly wind-down of operations, which is expected to be completed by the end of third quarter this year.

Both the Meldrim and Summerville facilities produce kiln-dried Southern Yellow Pine dimensional lumber. The combined capacity of both the mills are estimated at around 330 million board feet per year.
The impact of the curtailments on production volumes for the remainder of the year was included in the temporary curtailment guidance published earlier this month. However, the indefinite nature of these curtailments suggest that the likely impacts on lumber production are expected to extend beyond the current year.
The curtailments are feared to impact approximately 180 employees across the two facilities. The company aims to partially mitigate the impacts on employees by providing work opportunities at other company facilities, wherever possible. The company will continue to monitor market conditions across its operations and adjust production plans accordingly, the press release said.
