SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to reports, prominent Canadian miner Hudbay Minerals is applying for a permit to extend its copper mine in Peru, Constancia. According to a project study filed with the environmental authority, the $210 million project, which includes improvements at the Pampacancha satellite pit, intends to increase the mine's operational capacity and processing efficiency.
The Constancia pit would be enlarged, according to the idea. It also entails raising the height of the tailings dam wall and installing new processing machinery. The business anticipates starting the constriction in 2025's fourth quarter.
According to the analysis, five major upgrades can be implemented to optimize operations at the mine. It suggests installing two crushers, a third ball mill, and sophisticated ore-sorting equipment. The mine's authorized daily processing capacity of 85,000 tonnes is not anticipated to be exceeded by the aforementioned improvements. The project will also continue to operate according to the mine's present schedule.
The last two years have seen output issues at the Constancia copper mine. During the first ten months of 2024, the mine produced around 74,617 tonnes of copper, which was a 5.3% decrease from the same period in 2023.
