SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The city of Houston is asking residents to leave plastic water bottles intact when placing them in recycling bins.
According to city officials, crushed or flattened plastic bottles can confuse the automated sorting machines used in Houston's recycling facilities. By keeping bottles in their original shape, the sorters can more easily recognize and properly process them.
"Let’s do our part to recycle properly and keep the system flowing smoothly," the city said in a social media post.
The city recommends the following recycling guidelines:
Accepted items include plastics labeled #1–5 and #7 (excluding #6 plastics like Styrofoam), aluminum and tin cans, corrugated cardboard, cartons, envelopes, home and office paper, magazines, mail, newspapers, and telephone books.
Ensure all recyclable items are empty, clean, and dry before placing them loosely into the green recycling bin.
Do not bag recyclables, as plastic bags are not accepted in curbside recycling.
If your recycling bin is full, place additional materials in a separate paper grocery bag and set it beside the bin.
Houston Solid Waste Management also offers an app, HTX Collects, that provides residents with information about collection schedules, service alerts, and where to drop off recyclables.
