Honolulu (HI) City and County Aims to Make Recycling Easier for Oahu Residents

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): The Honolulu City Council unanimously approved a bill which will allow residents to recycle more materials from homes like cardboard boxes, containers and food waste. Council members said it is time to address Oahu’s landfill issues. “You might get one of those clear looking cups from restaurants that says compostable on it. Often times, it looks like plastic and holds like it but what it’s made out of can be composted and turned back into dirt,” said Councilmember of Matt Weyer, co-author of Bill 47.

The current law only allows green waste material from your yard. Councilmembers believe increasing curbside pick-up will promote sustainability and help with waste management. This is just a domino effect and they are working on how glass can be more easily recycled and even ash.

“It’s important to recycle in Hawaii because these are small islands. The trash can’t go anywhere but here in our landfills so we need to look for as many ways to be environmentally friendly,” said Xavier Bezares, Waianae resident.
