Granger Wants to Expand on Watertown, MI Landfill Closed in 1980s

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Granger Waste Services is looking to build a new landfill in a familiar location, on top of one that was sealed up nearly four decades ago. The Lansing-based company has taken initial steps to reclassify an old 60-acre landfill, which is on the same property as the currently-operating Grand River Highway landfill in southern Clinton County. The company wants the county to change its solid waste management plan to allow new work on the closed landfill, the first step toward an expansion that could take several years.

Granger officials told a Clinton County landfill committee last week that it likely would need three to five years for the necessary permitting, approvals, engineering and construction. The county’s Solid Waste Planning Committee is made of 14 people, including four from the waste industry, two from environmental interest groups, three representing the general public and several representatives of local governments, to address solid waste concerns for the region.

“We are not asking for tomorrow, there would still be EGLE (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy) permitting and county siting processes,” said Charles Hauser, a consultant for Granger and member of the landfill committee.
