SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alvance, part of GFG Alliance Group has announced major expansion plans for its Fort William, Scotland aluminum plant. The proposal would now be submitted to the Highlands Council for approval.
According to the company, the $124.5 million investment project will boost the scrap-fed aluminum production at the plant by approximately 40,000 metric tons per year. This essentially means doubling the plant’s capacity from current 40,000 metric tons per annum. The project comprises of installation of a new recycling and casting facility. In order to improve logistics facilities, the company will conduct significant upgrades to the nearby port of Corpach.
The new casting facility will produce billets, which will be marketed to UK’s domestic construction sector, which currently depends mainly on imported materials. The project will make use of domestic scrap aluminum that is currently exported.
Sanjeev Gupta, executive chair, GFG Alliance noted that the new facilities will create market-leading ‘Green Aluminum’ products. Meantime, Fergus Ewing, a member of the Scottish Parliament commented that the government is committed to work with Alvance to secure the earliest possible investment in the Fort William complex.
