SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Fortescue Metals Group Ltd announced that it has restarted operations at its Pilbara mining site. The one-day halt in operations is unlikely to have material impact on the cost and output forecasts for fiscal 2022. It must be noted that the temporary stoppage had led to sharp spike in iron ore prices, though for a short period of time.
Earlier, the company had announced temporary suspension of operations at its Solomon Hub site in Pilbara region of Western Australia. This followed the ground collapse incident which took place at the site, which had resulted in the death of an employee.
While providing update on the mining incident that led to worker casualty, Elizabeth Gaines, Chief Executive Officer, Fortescue noted that it is a sad day for the company and that its thoughts are with the family. She assured full support to the family during this difficult time. With the help of a range of support services across the site, it aims to ensure the wellbeing of the entire Fortescue family, Gaines noted.
The company said that the ore processing activity has recommenced. Also, the mining activity is progressively resuming. The miner stated that it is working closely with all relevant authorities in investigating the cause of the incident.
