Finland's Paper Exports Declined Substantially In 2019

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics published by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) suggests 8% decline in Finland’s paper exports during the previous year. The value of exports totalled EUR 4.02 billion, accounting for nearly one-third of the total value of forest industry exports.

Meantime, the value of paperboard exports by the country registered marginal decline by 2% to total EUR 2.86 billion. The value of forest industry product exports totalled EUR 12.47 billion, which accounted for almost one-fifth of the country’s total goods exports during the year. The value of pulp exports was EUR 2.38 billion. In value terms, the pulp exports have declined by 10% from the previous year.

The country imported 11.86 million cubic metres of wood in 2019, which were valued at EUR 0.51 billion. The volume of wood imports surged higher by 3%, compared with the year before that. Out of the total imported wood, pulpwood accounted for 57%, whereas wood chips and logs constituted 33% and 3% share respectively. The pulpwood imports have declined by 7% from the previous year. Birch pulpwood accounted for 40% of all wood imports.

The key source of wood imports by Finland was Russia with 74% market share, followed by the Baltic region with 21%.
