SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The total steel imports stood at 2.708 million net tons during the month of October this year, as per the most recent statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is significantly down by 16.7% when compared with the final imports in September. The finished steel imports too registered 6% year-on-year decline to total 2.325 million net tons.
The finished steel product that reported highest surge in import volumes was hot rolled sheets, whose imports during October 2021 recorded nearly 13% year-on-year surge. The imports of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip too were up by 12%. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 24% during the month.
The steel imports totalled 26.530 million net tons through the initial ten-month period of the current year, which is notably higher by 38.5% over the same period in 2020. The cumulative finished steel imports too surged higher significantly by 39.6% to total 19.012 million net tons. The products with significant year-to-date increases were hot rolled sheets and plates in coils, whose imports skyrocketed by 123% and 95% respectively. The other product with notable increase in imports was wire rods.
