SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The City of Baltimore has been selected as the recipient of the $9.5 million by Washington-based American Beverage, as part of its ‘Every Bottle Back’ initiative, aimed at improving recycling collection and infrastructure.
The project comprises investment from The Recycling Partnership, Closed Loop Partners’ Infrastructure Fund and also from the beverage industry. Dow Packing & Specialty Plastics would donate plastic resins for recycling carts. Rehrig Pacific will manufacture and supply lidded rollout carts to support the program.
As part of the project, the City of Baltimore will provide free recycling carts to 205,000 households, which in turn is aimed at boosting the collection of more recyclable items, including beverage bottles and cans. The City will also launch an education and awareness campaign to inform households about the new carts and to provide them with a clear idea with respect what could be recycled and what could not.
The project is expected to lead to collection of additional million pounds of recyclables per annum, which equates to 80% surge in recyclables per Baltimore household. Also, it would result in collection of 30 million pounds of plastic over the next decade, including 16 million pounds of PET.
