Europe’s Crude Steel Output Recorded Notable Surge in 2017

During 2017, Hungary reported biggest jump in crude output. The output by the country surged higher by more than 49% over the previous year to total 1.9 Mt in 2017.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The crude output statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests significant surge in output by the European region in 2017. The output by the EU-28 countries reported 4% jump, whereas the other European countries recorded phenomenal jump of more than 13% over the prior year. The European crude output ended higher during the month of December too.

The combined yearly crude steel output by EU-28 countries totaled 168.68 million tonnes (Mt) in 2017, higher by 4.1% when matched with the output of 162.02 Mt in 2016. The largest regional producer was Germany, followed by Italy and France. The German output edged higher by 3.5% to total 43.560 Mt in 2017. The output had totaled only 42.080 Mt in 2016. The output by Italy too was up by 2.9% from 23.373 Mt in 2016 to 24.041 Mt in 2017. The output by France totaled 15.506 Mt, higher by nearly 8% over the previous year.

During 2017, Hungary reported biggest jump in crude output. The output by the country surged higher by more than 49% over the previous year to total 1.9 Mt in 2017. The other countries to report significant growth in output were Croatia (+40%), Bulgaria (+23.7%) and Greece (+19.2%). On the other hand, output by the Czech Republic declined sharply by over 14%. The output by Finland, the Netherlands and the UK too registered decline by around 2% each during the year.

Meantime, the output by other European countries including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey recorded sharp jump in 2017. The yearly production by these countries totaled 40.623 Mt as against 35.931 Mt in 2016. Turkey accounted for more than 92% of the total regional output. The Turkish crude steel output surged higher by 13.1% year-on-year from 33.163 Mt to 37.524 Mt.

The EU-28 region’s monthly crude steel output during December 2017 totaled 13.633 million tonnes (Mt), which is higher by 5.8% from December 2016. Germany continued to remain as the largest producer in the region. The other European countries reported over 15% surge in output during the month. The Dec ’17 output by other Europe totaled 3.578 Mt, as against 3.110 Mt in December 2016.
