SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The e-scrap and ITAD operations across the country are reportedly playing a key role during the challenging times. Largely, these operations have been classified under ‘essential services’, which in turn has helped the sector to stay open amid widespread shutdown by companies in many other sectors.
The electronics recycling business, being part of recycling services, has been identified by as many as 17 states, as falling under the list of essential services. Almost all other states too consider it as broadly essential. The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) also noted that e-waste recycling and various other cyber security-related services have been classified by the government under “essential services” category.

The above designation has resulted in e-scrap and ITAD firms to continue operations even during these difficult times. Meantime, closure of businesses and public drop-off sites has impacted e-scrap collection volumes. The e-scrap firms across the North American region have reported 80% dip in collection volumes since the outbreak of the virus. Also, many processors such as Cascade Asset Management have limited device pickups only to organizations in essential industries or those deemed essential due to security reasons.
