SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): As part of ensuring complete safety of its employees, packaging leader DS Smith announced new safety measures at its Figueira da Foz depot in Portugal.
The company press release said that the location falls under high risk category as it collects and manages general waste from the locality including medical waste from two local hospitals. The new safety precautions implemented at the facility are aimed at mitigating the risks associated with carrying out the above activities.
The company has decided to avoid the possibility of physical contact with hospital staff during collection of necessary documentation. For this, a new system has been put in place, whereby documents will be sent in advance by e-mail, whose printout will be taken internally and handed over to drivers. In addition, DS Smith has instructed employees who deal with medical sector to be strictly equipped with personal protective equipment including disposable masks and gloves.

Alessandro Duarte Commercial Sales Representative at DS Smith Recycling in Portugal noted that the company is committed to ensure that essential collections from customers and suppliers including hospitals are not interrupted. At the same time, the top priority will be to ensure the health and wellbeing of its employees, he added.
