SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging leader DS Smith announced that it has embedded cutting-edge Circular Design Metrics across its packaging sites, as part of promoting transition to the circular economy and helping its customers reach their sustainability goals.
With this, DS Smith can now measure and quantify the sustainability performance of each of its packaging designs across several key indicators, including carbon footprint, renewable source and recycled content. It is the first global packaging company to offer such a unique tool, which will help its customers to have a clear idea about the circularity performance of its packaging design. It must be noted that design stage accounts for almost 80% of the product’s environmental impact.
Chris Else, Head of Design, Packaging Division, DS Smith noted that the rollout is in support of its customers in their transition to circular economy, in line with its Now and Next strategy. The metrics will help customers to compare different design solutions and select the best product that support their sustainability targets, by rating the products’ circularity.
DS Smith aims to have all of its packaging to be recycled or reused by 2030.
