CZI Calls for Restrictions on Scrap Metal Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The industry associations in Zimbabwe have urged the government to restrict exports of scrap metal from the country, so as to ensure raw material supply to domestic manufacturing firms.

The Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) Matabeleland Chapter has urged its members to engage in discussions with the Government. According to them, the unregulated scrap metal exports from the country have been counterproductive for the country, while local industry faces acute shortage of raw material. The government needs to place control on issuing new permits for scrap metal exports, said Mr Sheppered Chawira, the president of CZI Matabeleland Chamber.

The Chamber plans to organize an engagement meeting, probably before the end of the current year, to voice the industry’s concerns before the government. He urged participation of all members and scrap metal consumers in the meeting. The meeting plans to forward a formal request to the government to ban exports of scrap materials, thereby saving the local industry.

The monthly scrap requirement by Zimbabwean local industry is estimated at around 27,000 tonnes, whereas the current supply totals only around 10,000 tonnes per month. This essentially means that the country faces a short supply of around 17,000 tonnes per month.
