Crude Steel Production Dropped 21% in African Countries

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African crude steel production recorded substantial decline during the month of June this year, fuelled by production declines in major producing countries including Egypt, Libya and South Africa. The regional output during the initial six months of the current year too was down considerably.

The monthly crude steel production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that African production totalled 875,000 tonnes, falling significantly by 21.3% from the previous year. The region had reported a total production of 1.112 Mt in June 2019.

Egypt continued to remain as the largest steel producer in the region, with an estimated output of 600,000 tonnes of crude steel. The country accounted for more than 69% of the total regional production. The country’s monthly steel output remained essentially unchanged, falling slightly by 0.5% year-on-year. The second largest producer- South Africa reported 49.3% year-on-year decline from 454,000 tonnes to 230,000 tonnes. Meantime, the Libyan output posted 17.2% year-on-year decline.

The cumulative steel production by the African countries during the initial half of 2020 totalled 5.947 Mt, down by approximately 21% upon comparison with the output of 7.511 Mt during H1 2019.

The global crude steel production reported decline by 7.0% to total 148.295 Mt in June this year.
