SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Conifex Timber, Inc. announced temporary curtailment of operations at two of its B.C. sawmills. The curtailment is scheduled to begin today (May 6, 2019).
Consequently, the operations at Fort St. James mill will be impacted for a period of four weeks. Also, the Mackenzie mill operations will be curtailed for a period of three weeks. The company has cited high log costs and challenging lumber market conditions as the reasons for the decision. The temporary curtailment is expected to reduce Conifex Timber’s B.C lumber output by approximately 24 million board feet.
Conifex follows temporary curtailment of B.C. operations by other major companies including Canfor and Interfor. Interfor Corporation had announced plans for reduced operating days at its three B.C. area mills during this month. Also, Canfor Corporation had announced temporary curtailment of operations at all of its B.C. dimension mills effective April 29th.
