SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Irving, Texas based Commercial Metals Company (CMC) announced that its micro mill in Mesa, Arizona has started receiving renewable solar energy from ‘Saint Solar’ electricity plant, located in Coolidge, Arizona. The 100-megawatt solar array electricity generation plant is being set up Salt River Project (SRP).
Announcing the decision, Tracy Porter, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, CMC stated that the company’s participation in the Saint Solar project underscores its commitment to reducing carbon footprint further through the use of renewable energy. In addition, it supports sustainable steelmaking process by using recycled scrap for 98% of its raw material for manufacturing steel.

Jim Pratt, Associate General Manager and Chief Customer Executive at SRP noted that SRP is excited to partner with CMC Steel Arizona on its shared renewable energy goals. This is just the beginning of its sustainable energy partnership with the company. It looks forward to partner with CMC on its AZ2 micro mill, which is being built adjacent to this facility, Pratt added.
The CMC Steel Arizona uses scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology. It is one of the most efficient and green steelmaking facilities in the world.
