SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Clarendon has agreed to a new recycling contract with a large waste hauler. The select board voted unanimously at its Sept. 25 meeting to approve a new five-year contract with Casella Waste Systems.
Randall Dapron, market area manager at Casella Waste Systems, said the town’s 10-year contract with his company is up, and the cost of recycling materials has increased. “Over the first five years of the contract, it worked pretty well with the formula we were using, and during the past five years, it did not,” he said. “It actually cost us $12,000 … over that five-year period to haul your recycling.”
He said that getting rid of recycling materials in the Northeast is more expensive than disposing of trash. Responding to questions from the board, he noted that the town owns the trash compactor at its transfer station while Casella owns the recycling compactor and the associated bins. Casella maintains the trash compactor but doesn’t bill the town for this.
