SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Century Aluminum Company announced that its wholly owned subsidiary has achieved prestigious Aluminium Stewardship Initiative's (ASI) Performance Certification for its Grundartangi, Iceland aluminium smelter facility.
The certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to the environment and society and the well-governed practices followed at the facility. The Norðurál Grundartangi ehf’s plant comprises of a smelter and casthouse that runs of hydroelectric and geothermal energy, thus contributing to significant carbon savings.

Commenting on the achievement, Gunnar Guðlaugsson, CEO of Norðurál Grundartangi ehf noted that the certification confirms the company’s continuing commitment to responsible production process. Further, it demonstrates its commitment to operate in a sustainable manner by focusing on continuous improvement. The company will boost its efforts to minimize environmental impacts, he added.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI congratulated Century Aluminum and its subsidiary on its ASI Certification.
Incidentally, ASI is a global sustainability certification program for the aluminum industry, covering both upstream and downstream manufacturers of products containing the metal.
Century Aluminum is due to release fourth quarter 2019 earnings on Thursday, February 20, 2020. The company had reported growth slowdown in several markets during Q3 '19.
