SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canfor Southern Pine, a part of Canadian integrated forest products major Canfor Corporation has instigated the multi-million dollar expansion project at its Moultrie, Georgia sawmill. The scheduled $28 million expansion is expected to result in significant rise in production capacity at the Colquitt County sawmill. Further, the expansion would further boost the mill’s operating efficiencies. As per reports, the company has already begun works in connection with installation of new equipment.
The expansion is being carried out with active support from the Colquitt County Economic Development Authority (EDA). In order to carry out the planned expansion of the facility, the company has already purchased the adjoining land, reports say. Also, the road that presently splits the property may be closed permanently. In addition, the company has entered into an agreement with the Colquitt Regional Technical College, whereby the latter shall offer onsite and offsite vocational training programs to local residents as well as employees.
According to Darrell Moore, president of the Colquitt EDA, the investment will lead to creation of 10 well-paid direct jobs and around 30 indirect jobs at the facility, including forestry and trucking operations. Moreover, the construction phase could generate up to 60 temporary jobs in the region. In order to qualify for the New Market Tax Credit, the company has stipulated the wages to be at least 30% higher than the average wages in the area.
Meantime, Moultrie Mayor Bill Macintosh thanked Canfor Southern Pine for the confidence expressed in its community. The investment offers immense potentials for community growth, he added.
