SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Canfor Corporation announced reopening of its Houston sawmill after a lengthy shutdown.
The mill will reopen today, June 8th, following a long shutdown that began in March due to declining lumber market demand and economic slowdown resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. The mill will operate on four days a week schedule. It must be noted that the mill had been operating Monday to Thursday schedule before shutdown as well.

According to company press release, the company’s Polar mill at Bear Lake north of Prince George is also scheduled to reopen on June 8th. It had earlier resumed operations at Plateau mill, west of Vanderhoof. The Canfor Isle Pierre mill east of Vanderhoof also has reopened in order to clear out its log inventory before it closes its doors permanently in Q3 2020. On the other hand, it has also decided to shut down its Prince George Pulp and Paper and Intercontinental Pulp mill for a period of four weeks.
The company owns and operates a total of 15 sawmill facilities across the U.S. Several of its U.S. facilities have been operating at reduced operating capacity for several weeks, with many of them reporting variable operating schedules and downtime.
Earlier during the month, the company had announced completion of acquisition of Elliott Sawmilling Co. Inc. located in Estill, South Carolina, in a $110 million deal.
