SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) said that Canada emerged as the largest supplier of steel mill products to the U.S. during the month of January this year.
The supplies from Canada totalled 577,000 net tons in Jan ’22, higher by 3.3% from 559,000 net tons in December last year. When compared with the same month a year before, the supplies were up by 2.1%. The U.S. had imported 566,000 net tons of steel mill products from Canada in January 2020.

In second place was Mexico with supplies of 571,000 net tons. The imports from that country too were up by 3.2% from December 2021. Brazil, which supplied 425,000 net tons of steel mill products to the U.S. in the opening month of 2022, emerged as the third largest supplier. The supplies from Brazil skyrocketed by 67.7% over the prior month, but were down significantly by almost 49% from the year ago month.
The other major suppliers were Russia (159,000 net tons), South Korea (152,000 net tons) and Vietnam (143,000 net tons).
The current 3-month rolling average of U.S. imports of finished steel mill products from Canada, at 526,000 net tons, were down by 7.1%, whereas that from Mexico were up by 11.6%.
